I agree, social lists are important and using features like Twitter lists and Klout Lists to organize and track your social media fans into usable lists is great. If only you can find a way to broadcast a message to all people on your list specifically, that would be a good feature but probably lead to just spamming.

I don't totally agree with Mary from Fido. My dog was in this contest and NOT removed for "cheating". Entrants were crying out for an explanation on why Fido reversed their decision and that was not clearly communicated. Were they mistaken? Giving in to the pressure of angry owners? Was every dog that was removed, returned? If so, what is the point of that? The dog that was in the number 1 spot for weeks was removed, and then returned to his number 1 spot. When the contest ended, he was still in number 1 yet he is NOT the winning dog. So what was the point of returning him to the contest?

There was also no explanation for why the dogs that were left in the contest on November 11 were not able to keep any of the votes they collected that day once the removed dogs were put back in. The dogs that Fido admits were breaking the rules were allowed to remain in the contest, yet it appears it was only the "non-cheating" dogs that got the short end of the stick that day. Why couldn't they put the dogs back in AND let the ones that were not removed keep the votes they collected on Nov. 11? (I assume it was a technical reason, but that doesn't make it right)

The real winner here is Canada Dog Guides, it is just a shame that this massive donation is overshadowed by the contest debacle.

Hi Gregg. This is Mary with Fido’s Social Media team. First off, thank you for your blog post. No doubt, there were some unexpected bumps along the way that we’ve learned from and will implement the next time around. One of the greatest things about social media is that it provides immediate customer feedback, which is invaluable and we respect greatly. We’ve never shied from both positive and negative feedback so we thank each and every customer for their comment.

To clarify a few points, we did have a very clear plan and guidelines to follow. We could have planned better for the unexpected, but again that’s a learning for us. We did however address the issue and soon as we saw it pop up on the wall and let customers know we were looking into the issue immediately. We did our best to keep everyone informed as much as possible, considering volume of posts. As the day progressed, we did respond to why some dogs were removed while continuing to review our decision. When we reversed our decision, we communicated that as soon as possible. All within the same day. In relation to ongoing quality control, we did remove all entries that were not dogs (I’m pretty sure I didn’t see any pigs but there was a definitely a ferret or two, and those don’t bark J ).

In the end, we are still pleased with the outcome. Over $220,000 was raised for Canada Dog Guides and that’s no barking matter.

Thanks again! If ever you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us @FidoSolutions.
