News releases: Some basic pros and cons to never forget

Hopefully news releases are a staple in your communications toolbox. But there are still many common mistakes made in issuing releases. One of the most frequent mistakes I witnessed during my media career was poor timing. It was not uncommon to see news releases arrive well after deadline, and therefore fail to be used. In this podcast I’ll discuss some other pitfalls, as well as some pros. This is part 4 of my ongoing 8-part series on traditional mass media tools.

Public Service Announcements (PSAs) still a viable option for free exposure

Although traditional mass media, especially newspapers, are tightening or slashing the amount of ad space they give away as freebies, Public Service Announcements (PSAs) remain an effective and free alternative tool for nonprofits in small in medium markets.  You won’t be able to dictate when your PSAs will be published or broadcasted, but making PSAs available to the media is a smart move. At some time or another, media finds itself motivated to fill a space on a page, web page or on-the-air space at no cost as a community service.

Feeling like your communications strategy is going in circles?
